About the Southeast Area Square Dance Council
We love Square Dancing! We love our square dance community!
We travel to our other clubs and dance together. Square dancing means more to us than just twirling around on the floor.
The SEASDC Council's main objective to is strengthen our clubs with your participation and enthusiasm.
Learn to square dance and make new friends!
The Southeast Area Square Dance Council was organized by Bill Meredith on March 11, 1956 to aid in the “furtherance of the program and good fellowship of square, round, and folk dancing. To this end this Council shall promote and sponsor such programs as may tend to increase participation in the dancing activities.”
The Council serves twenty counties in the southeastern section of Colorado. Tod Williams became the first president elected by representatives of eight clubs. Four clubs are members of this Council. There are four district councils in the State of Colorado. The Colorado Square Dance Association's website is here: https://coloradosquaredance.com/ It is not fully updated so make sure you contact event sponsors prior to attending.
The 1961 State Festival was hosted by the Southeast Area in Pueblo. In 1962 the Cheyenne Mountain Festival was located in Colorado Springs honoring the Cheyenne Mountain Dancers and Dr. and Mrs. Lloyd Shaw “Pappy” as he was affectionately called. Dr. Shaw formerly superintendent of Cheyenne Mountain Schools, is well known as the father of modern square dancing. State Festivals are rotated every year between the district councils. SEASDC hosted the 2024 State Festival in Pueblo and you can read about it in our Spring 2024 newsletter. The 2025 State Festival will be held in Grand Junction.
